Former President John Dramani Mahama has accused the Akufo-Addo government of failing to move the economy from a tax-reliant one to one bolstered by production, as he promised in the lead-up to the 2016 polls.
Mr Mahama said prior to the 2016 general elections, the then-opposition NPP flayed his government for, in their view, excessively taxing Ghanaians and promised to move away from taxes should they win power to form a government.
Mr Mahama is, therefore, wondering why the NPP, after coming into office for almost two years, is failing to fulfill its campaign promises but rather widening the tax net.
Mr Mahama made the remarks when he addressed party delegates separately at Ejisu and Subin constituencies, as part of his four-day campaign tour of the Ashanti Region.
Harassing people, in Mr Mahama’s view, to pay tax in this harsh economic condition in Ghana, is not the best and advised that the government concentrate on working to fix the economy, which would automatically push every Ghanaian to pay tax.
"During the NDC's tenure, they [NPP] said we were overtaxing Ghanaians, but they will cut taxes if they win power. They said they will move Ghana from taxation to production, but if you see what they are doing now, it is moving Ghana from taxation to double taxation," he said.
Mr Mahama also bemoaned the government’s inability to start the second phase of the Kejetia Market.
He said the NDC government secured funding for the second phase of the project before leaving office and, thus, wondered what is preventing the Akufo-Addo government from continuing it.
He said being the largest market centre in the country, the Kejetia Market needed to be fixed and called on the government to urgently start the second phase.

As usual, the Zongo communities in Ashanti region massively support NDC with some bitter Akans like Sammy Gyamfi, Brogya Gyamfi, Asarfu Adjei and Kwaku Boahen.
MAHAMA TELL GHANAIANS YOU USED THEIR MONEY TO BUY A HOTEL IN DUBAI AND RAYMOND OF RLG IS MANAGING IT FOR YOU. TELL GHANAIANS YOU HAVE STOLEN THEIR MONEY AND IT IS IN YOUR DNA TO STEAL AND THE MAIN REASON WHY YOU WANT TO COME BACK TO STEAL MORE. IF AKUFFO ADDO IS DOUBLE TAXING THEN YOU HAVE CAUSED IT .

This kleptomania called John Ford Dumsor Mahama is confused...... He has nothing to say to his delegates........ I wonder who is listening to him..... The delegates must chop his stolen cash and vote against him.
THEY HAVEN'T FULFILL THEIR PROMISES BECAUSE THEY ARE CLEANING YOUR MESS SO SHOUT UP....
FOOOILISSHH TALK FROM THE FOOOOOLISSSSH MAN.
If Nana Addo is double taxing Ghanaians ,at least he is not charging the Ghanaian 4 times for every single project and stashing the cash in the Canary Islands. The 'Aaya Lolo 'buses has a price tag of $ 8o.00. The World Bank advised government to purchase only 18 to start a pilot project. The NDc bought 200@ @$250,000 each when the special bus lanes had not been created for the project Right now the buses are at the Achimota bus terminal, and trust me in a year's time parts will be missing. Why do we allow politicians ti do this to us? People there are many individuals in Ghana including the chief th13f Mahama who are fabulously rich . We sit down and do nothing as this big r0bber wants to come back to st3a1 some more. The monies that should have been used to complete the Adent-Madina foot-bridges were st0l3n by this bunch of vultures . Now that people are dying they are blaming others . Folks do not allow politicians to treat us so shabbily.
THIS MAN TALKS AS IF ALL GHANAIANS ARE STUPIDDD AND FOOLLLS.WAS HE NOT TAXING EVEN POOR KAYAYA? AS MAHAMA HE SHOULD RETIRE.GHANAIANS SHOULD LOOK FOR ALTERNATIVE PARTY IF NPP FAILS BUT NOT THESE EVIL NDC.NEVER AGAIN.
