Former President John Dramani Mahama has expressed concern over the government’s poor implementation of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy.
He says the challenges facing the implementation of Free SHS are adversely affecting the quality of secondary education.
Addressing delegates of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at Drobonso in the Sekyere Afram Plains Constituency as part of his flagbearership campaign tour of the Ashanti Region, Mr Mahama wondered why this year’s students are being made to spend just 41 days in the classroom under the double track system.
He said turning secondary education into green-gold “traffic light” under the double-track system could be detrimental to academic work of students, adding that it has brought pressure on parents to raise additional money to pay for remedial classes for their wards.
Mr Mahama observed that the Free SHS policy is a constitutional requirement and it is therefore important that it is properly implemented.
He has therefore reiterated his point that a new NDC administration will fix the challenges confronting free secondary education in Ghana by eliminating the double-track system.
He promised to build new dormitories, additional classroom blocks and also complete all the 200 Community Day Secondary School buildings as part of measures to reverse the double track system.
Mr Mahama has therefore urged delegates of the NDC to give him the mandate to lead the party to victory in the 2020 elections.

What remedial is he talking about? So this guy was once our president? No wonder I never felt it cuz all I saw was celepresident God protect mother Ghana
Talk is cheap.... We saw what you did when you were president. Listen to yourself.... Serious presidency is not about taking ford car as bribe.... This incompetent John Ford will soon kill the NDC party.
Incompetent, remove what? If you have ideas, why didn't you do it for the first time. This is why BAWUMIA CALLS YOU "INCOMPETENT ONE". ***barred word*** BEING.
YOU ARE NOT HEEDING RAWLINGS' ADVICE TO LISTEN TO YOURSELF. #MR. INCOMPETENT NO.1. YOU ARE A PAST TENSE OF A PRESIDENT. NEVER NEVER AGAIN.
The government has made it clear that it is not going to be permanent feature. Mahama is doing politics and not serious about making progress.
Thank you my bro. Are some of our politicians serious or they just want power so anything goes. The students are already in school so how are you going to eliminate the gold-green traffic? Ask them to stay home so you build dormetries, new classrooms, dining halls etc in a month or just reduce the numbers?. How are you going to do it Mr former Prez. Please listen to yourself when you speak. Are you just playing politics or have the welfare of Ghanaian children at heart
Look at him! "Students are being made to spend 41 days in the classroom "-Mahama. It is sad this is coming from a former president. I'm sorry Sir, but students do not spend 41days but rather 81 working days. The contact hours (I guess you know what it is) has also been increased from 40min per period to 1hr (This means that students are taught 40min extra when a tutor goes for the usual 2 period contact class). I teach in one of the best secondary schools in the country and I am pleased to announce to Mr Mahama that I have been able to complete all the topics we outlined for the first half of the semister (I used to complete same under the previous structure in the second term of the academic year) Before this system and under the previous government, first year students would report to school in late November but these days and under this government, first year students report latest by 15th September every year. .. If this is not relatively good then what is it? Ei , a quick reminder to Mr Mahama, we don't teach 24hrs in a day, so kindly check and compare the contact hours between a student and a teacher both under the previous and the current systems an come again.........
