General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah has described the Constitution Day as meaningless.
He says the NDC will abolish the holiday which does not add anything to the country’s development.
Speaking on Okay FM’s 'Ade Akye Abia' programme, the NDC scribe explained that he could not fathom why the Nana Addo led NPP government would want to rewrite the country’s history.
"The Constitution Day should at least give meaning to the country’s democracy, but in this case what will be your explanation if you are asked about the constitutional holiday. We will certainly abolish it when we come to power," he said.
"It would have been more prudent to have June 4th which had a military government overthrown and a constitutional government restored and even had the perpetrators killed celebrated because that reminds us of something that we have never thought of returning to as a country," he added.
The government has, through the Ministry of Interior, declared every January 7, as a public holiday.
In a statement signed by the Minister for Interior, Ambrose Dery, he said the day “has been declared a Public Holiday as “Constitution Day”.
Government recently tabled a bill in parliament seeking to amend the public holiday act.
President Nana Akufo-Addo made the proposal, the legislation will also designate August 4 as Founders’ Day.
The new bill which was laid by the Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery, on Thursday, December 13 is seeking to make January 7 Constitution Day and August 4, Founders' Day.
It is however proposing to scrap the AU holiday on May 25 as well as the Republic holiday on July 1.
If approved, the already existing Founder's Day holiday which is observed on September 21 will now be observed only as a Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day and would be a public holiday.
This means the AU and Republic days will also be observed only as commemorative days.

I am firm in my opinion that the members of the NDC from the Serial callers cum grassroots to the big Shots lack the ability to speak to issues with sound logical argumentation, without insulting. Even this determination was made by the murderous Founder of the Party, by describing the vociferous youth as babies with sharp teeth. Therefore, am not perturbed by their insults at all. Then, they don't know and just can't
Why is it that this current NDC leaders hate J.J.Rawlings this much. looking into this debate the only person who really benefit from this holiday is former president Rawlings. Whether u like or not the current constitution is Rawlings legacy of 1992 Kwame Nkrumah's constitution is never going to come back neither Aseidu Nkatsia's tantrums. I'm for 7th January not August. tell Asiadu Nkatsia to wait whenever he comes to power he can even kill Rawlings who care's. Is it not ASAIDU NKATSIA that we see in whats app oictures during JJ's time? Eii Ghana too! This guy is now a person to reckon with. Hmmmmm asam sebe!!!!
Always saying what they will abolish and not what they will do !!! Siiia fo)
Asiedu Nketia was probably drunk when he passed those comments. He is one of the few people in NDC who believe in democratic governance. The constitution is the supreme law of the land. Everything done in the country must be in conformity with the constitution. Setting aside a day to educate Ghanaians, especially students, on the need to support and sustain the constitution is a laudable initiative. Akufo-Addo has done welle
You have never made any meaningful contributions to our Ghana politics.
The stupiiiiiiiiidity of some of you is just overwhelming. So in-effect the new regions are created to vote massively for NPP.
Eye a hwe ne nkwaseanimu
Just wait when your corrupt NDC party ever gets to power after 40 years in opposition you can abolish it..... Vission11ess NDC party.....
Hahahahaha, look at you. When are you coming to abolish it? Eiiiiii, NDC let us trust you for once. Tsoooooooooooo. Loose talkers
NDC will lose in 2020 and how would they abolish this. The new regions will will vote massively for NPP and how will NDC come into play? Asiedu Nkestia is a moron as he cannot see and compare when Tain constituency voted for NDC during Atta Mills era. Ahafo Asante is voting on coctail of Ashanti Region, as well as Oti Region Asiedu Nkestia must start to go and sleep till 2024. There is deep crack in NDC.
