Former National Security Advisor, Brigadier-General Nunoo-Mensah says hosting Ghana’s 62nd Independence Day celebration in the Northern region is laudable – but, “not really important”.
He explained that funds used to move the celebration to the Northern part of the country could have been channeled into education and health sector.
"I don’t hate the people in the north but I don’t think this was necessary. How much did government spent on all dignitaries to Tamale? Most of them went by air and government will bear all these costs. We have so many things to do as a nation; we need money to develop this country,” he said in an interview with NEAT FM’s morning show ‘Ghana Montie’.
The Former Chief of Defence Staff, Brigadier General Joseph [rtd] Nunoo-Mensah's comment comes after suggestion by some historians that the Independence Day celebration must be rotated each year in all 16 regions in the country.
But the former military capo said the idea will rather cost the nation than its benefit - “This thing is not done anywhere in the world. We will spend millions of cedis just to celebrate independence. Let’s use that money to develop the country”.
The Northern Regional capital, Tamale, on 6th March 2019 hosted the country’s 62nd Independence Day anniversary parade.
It was the first time the event is being held outside the national capital, Accra.

Well to him i was a waste but for the people of Tamale it was a new and memorable experience. Opinions are like noses...
General, the people of Tamale are also Ghanaians not Togolese. At least for once the people of Tamale will fill proud as Ghanaians. Let us live as a United Country. Since Ghana attained independence we have been celebrating all this in Accra, what at all have it achieved for Ghanaians. Please Gen spare us this hypocrisy and let us move forward.
We really know the cost of everything but the value of nothing indeed. Which country celebrates events without some sort of a military parade? Why should it always be Accra? Is there any sense in rotating the National Farmers' Day celebration? Rotating that is fine but not the Indece celebration? Any individual who thinks too much of their stomach never develops!
Government has to spend and I agree we should see physical things to applaud the government, but if the expenditure goes to promote other citizens business I thick it should be welcome. The local airlines, car rentals, hotels and other recreational business, the hawkers, pity traders etc in Tamale benefited, its all part of development on people and business. The Government expenditure on indec day will not collapse our finances but rather check those who will take advantage of over invoicing.
Mr. General, money could not buy peace in the north and cannot buy peace everywhere. we talk too much in this country. I hope you know how much we have spent on peacekeeping in Yendi for the past 17 years. lets appreciate and value ourselves. we criticize everything in this country.
President Kuffuor once said, Ghanaians know the cost of everything but the value of nothing. Yes we might have spent money on the 62 independence celebration at Tamale. Are we analizing the benefits? In some instances the benefits that will be derived cannot be priced. By the way who said as a nation we were not spending when the celebrations take place in Accra?
Mr Information minister please Ghanaian know the cost. lets revise the celebration and use more profitably. Parading and matching pass i am against it. Those insulting a man for expression opinion please learn what democracy is instead.
The 62 Independence celebration is not only laudable; it is absolutely important. It fulfills a speedy transformation growth and demand of the country. Ghana has become more strongly united since the Dagbon internecine feud was solved; most useful information has settled in the region: it pays to settle problems by dialogue. This solution links Ghana to Niger, carrying the message the Zamramas and could get on well in the West African subregion. But more important it underlies the need to emphasize growth of the economy by regional contribution. The ***barred word*** feel the need to do the necessary learning by their neighbors. The poverty we see parading in Elmina and its environs is as bad as what Tumu shows the world. Knowledge spreading is faster and securer by such events as independence anniversary celebrations. A lot of useful lessons come home to the nation this way.
Abenezer, assume people don't understand him. Please tell us all what he meant.
Persons who will not take their time to analyze deeply into Mr. Nunoo Mensah's statement will poor insults on him. When reading an article your first understanding is little second reading will give you further understanding and from third going will really give you deep understand and this is what some people here, especially in our political scene, is refusing to do.
