Former Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry in the erstwhile Mahama administration, Hon. Murtala Mohammed has described the state of Ghana under President Akufo-Addo to be a “no vision, no method, no plan and no nothing”.
According to him, it is obvious for Ghanaians to “see the ship [Ghana] going into pieces...no vision, no method, no plan and no nothing. That is the best way you can describe the state of this nation”.
Speaking on Radio Gold’s "Alhaji and Alhaji" talk show, Murtala Mohammed indicated that the current economic chaallenges could have been avoided; reiterating that the country is experiencing these crises as a result of the inability of Akufo-Addo and his government to control their ego.
“...everybody knows that we are where we are because of the inability of the people who are given the mandate to govern us to control their uncontrollable ego”, he asserted.
To buttress his point, the former Deputy Minister claimed to have picked up information that the Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, in a private discussion had actually boasted he was going to deal with certain banks. Thus to him, the collapse of some indigenous banks was deliberately orchestrated for foreign banks to thrive.
“...there is no denying the fact that what they did to Unibank and the other banks is a classical example and confirmation of this rumour that is being peddled out there”, he alleged.
“In this country, what was shocking to me and I believe to most people is that these local and indigenous banks are being collapsed deliberately to pave way not only for the parochial interest of the minister of finance and his uncle, but to pave way for the foreign banks to strive. And I can tell you that almost all the operatives of the foreign banks....their leaderships are happy about what has happened to these domestic banks”, he claimed.
Inasmuch as the laws and regulations of the banking sector must be adhered to, Murtala Mohammed insisted that the Akufo-Addo government should have contextualised the circumstances by looking at the operation of those domestic banks vis-à-vis the other foreign banks.
