Chairman of the Energy Committee in Parliament and NPP MP for Tarkwa-Nsuaem Constituency, George Mireku Duker, has said the recent increment on electricity tariffs is in the right direction.
He explained that the increment was needed - and said ‘it will help the power sector vastly in its operations.’
The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission [PURC] announced an 11.7 percent upward electricity tariff adjustment.
The commission explained that, “the key objective of the tariff review was to sustain the financial viability of utility service providers as well as ensuring the delivery of quality service to consumers.”
However, the opposition NDC has criticized government for its decision to increase electricity tariff – but, George Mireku Duker in an interview with NEAT FM’s morning show ‘Ghana Montie’ described the NDC's comments as “unfortunate.”

Yes, it will be justifiable for him and his clique since they may not be paying for electricity and other utilities. If even they are, they can conveniently afford to pay because they have the resources at their disposal. There is always a way to graduate these increments so that the ordinary person doesn't suffer unduly. It could be staggered for a period and other means of cushioning off the harsh effects of the increment could be deployed!
