Hundreds of nurse trainees from the Sunyani Nursing and Midwifery Training College have hailed President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for restoring their trainee allowance, which was cancelled by the erstwhile Mahama-led NDC government.
Wielding placards with inscriptions such as: “We don’t need JM back to cancel our allawa”, “We are happy for the allawa”, “Nana nie, allawa nie”, and “Our parents thank you for allawa”, the nurses mobbed President Akufo-Addo, prior to his meeting with the Bono Region House of Chiefs on Monday, 7 October 2019.
Thus far, 51,130 nursing trainee students are receiving allowances in the nursing training and midwifery colleges across the country, with some GHS410 million disbursed so far in twenty (20) months.
On 10 October 2019, President Akufo-Addo, speaking at the Sunyani Nursing and Midwifery Training College, at the restoration of the nursing trainee allowances, indicated that the decision to restore the nursing training allowances was not mere political rhetoric, campaign talk, and neither was it to meant deceive nursing trainees in order to get their votes.
According to President Akufo-Addo, “It was much more than that. We believed, and still believe, that Ghana needs all the nurses and healthcare workers she can get, if the nation is to have a solid, world-class healthcare system, and we think it necessary to provide the relevant incentives to make that possible.”
Bemoaning the cancellation of the allowance in 2014 by the government of the former President John Dramani Mahama, President Akufo-Addo noted that this singular action brought untold hardships to the thousands of nurses and midwives in the country, who depended on it for their studies and for their welfare.
The cancellation, according to the President, left many trainee nurses demotivated and demoralised.
“The New Patriotic Party and I heard your cry, and assured you of the restoration of these allowances, if we won the election. By the grace of God, and by the generosity and trust of the Ghanaian people, I am here, today, as President of the Republic, ready to fulfil the pledge we made to you,” he said.

if all politicians chop our monies and the so call shot man will use that same monies to take care of our children, then praise the lord.what at all john mahamah did extraordinary for ghanaians. only circle dubai.but nana uncountable
If they are not being and they claim they are getting the cash who cares? Ash3 mu bu! These are things that are purely used for electoral dividends but in the long run, they are unsustainable. Already, right thinking professionals have questioned sustainability of such hand-outs. Would one enjoy these stipends which are irregular for 3 years only to complete and picket at the ministries for jobs. This is a situation of cut your nose to spite your face. Interesting though is 'their tricks will not work this time' The taxes even higher, it is only a certain type of family that is capturing state resources and as for corruption they campaigned about is now in many, many folds.
You will complete and stay at home for the 5yrs com Nana will not complete all the health facilities started by Mahama.
THE POLITICS IN GHANA IS CONTINUOUSLY BECOMING ***barred word***. OUR POLITICS HAS DEGENERATED TO THE GUTTERS ALL BECAUSE OF MAHAMA AND NDC. NOT LONG AGO NURSES IN THE NORTH WAS USED TO GIVE SUPPORT TO MAHAMA. IN REACTION NURSES IN THE CENTRAL GHANA SHOW APPRECIATION TO NANA AKUFO ADDO. THE ACTION OF NURSES IN THE NORTH MAY HAVE NO BASIS AND COULD BE CONSIDERED PURELY POLITICAL. THE ACTION OF THE NURSES IN BONO MAY BE LARGELY CONSIDERED BY MANY AS APPRECIATION FOR RESTORING NURSES ALLOWANCE AND THEIR HUGE EMPLOYMENT BY THE GOVERNMENT
Frank, you have a genuine question but I wonder how on earth will any person in the right frame of mind will willingly congratulate, praise, adore or even worship a person who deprives you of a means of living when this same person had not spared this same opportunity even though he had "worthy" parents who could afford it.
POLITICS IN GHANA IS VERY INTERESTING !!......SOME FEW WEEKS AGO SOME NURSES ELSEWHERE WERE PAINTED BLACK FOR SUPPORTING JM BUT OTHERS ARE HAILED FOR SHOWING SUPPORT FOR NANA..........GOD BLESS OUR HOMELAND GHANA
So did NPP also pay these nurses to do this?
