President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, during his visit to the Volta Region on Monday, October 16 to assess the impact of the Akosombo dam spillage and the situation of the victims, stirred controversy when he subtly chipped in that he had visited to sympathize with the victims regardless of the fact that the residents don't vote for his party.
The President has therefore come under intense criticisms over the comment he made while addressing the victims.
“When these things happen and government acts, politics does not come into the matter at all. When I took the Oath of Office as President, I took the oath as president for every single individual in Ghana, all people in Ghana, all districts and whether they voted for me or not, once I have taken the oath, I am the President of all the people so Togbe, I want the people here, beginning with you, and the elders to understand that when something like this happens and Government acts, Government is acting for Ghanaians, all Ghanaians.
“I came here because Ghanaians are having difficulties and are suffering, and it is my responsibility to try and help. Because, if it is a question of counting who votes for me and who doesn't vote for me, then I shouldn't be here, because you don't vote for me. But that is not my concern. And, in any event, one day you will vote for me and my party," he said to some of the victims at Mepe in the Region.
Though the gathering laughed together with the President, he is however being gibed as to some people, the President chose a bad time for his remark.
Some critics feel he was insensitive and others think he was exploiting the situation for his political gains.
But Nana Akomea has called on Ghanaians to cut the President some slack.
According to him, what the President said was intended to relieve the unfortunate situation of the victims.
"..it is clear that the President was just being on a lighter side. He was joking and the gathering, from their reactions, they took it as a joke," he said in defence of the President.

You find your own countrymen in this situation, and all you can do is to joke with their predicaments??? aba, Nana Akomea.. this one di333 come again. Ghanaians are no longer spectators oo
What's wrong with this comment. Read or listen to the whole conversation without political mischief and you will see nothing wrong with it. The implication is that political leaders should not discriminate on the basis of who vote for my party or who don't. The resources of Ghana belong to all Ghanaians and should be distributed equally. It's only the d3vel who will see it as insults.
To say it was just a joke shows how insensitive and ***barred word*** these grown adults are. We don’t blame you guys, we blame ourselves for entrusting a whole country into the hands of sycophants, bootlickers, ***barred word*** adults and f.o.ol.s.
That even made it more sillier! It is offensive when he gaffes and some ediot from the ruling party thinks he/she is imbued with Solomonic Wisdom and can therefore explain away the obvious mistakes he makes! You think Ghanaians are tsupid and don't understand unless you explain to us what the president says? Or he spoke Zulu and since you are the only one who understands Zulu in Ghana you need to explain to us, right? This is not the first and it will not be the last time he makes outlandishly tsupid statements in sensitive situations. At a time people have lost everything and merely surviving by the day he thinks this is the occasion to dangle the political carrot And you have people jumping to his defense!. Really? Who even gives a fak who the president is at this time? Voting is the last thing on the mind of anyone in that situation those victims find themselves in. Only a very tsupid ,evil-dwarf will make the comments he made on the platform he made them! For Christ's sake let's put politics aside and be human beings if even for a minute.
@obi-ba, I tend to agree with you to some extent. However, this current NPP is not an option for breaking the 8 either. Because, just like the NDC, they have even scaled up the ***barred word*** and stealing. Most of the people involved in the destruction of Ghana through galamsay activities are in this government or chairmen of the NPP. Osafo maafo and co resorted to deporting Aisha huan instead of allowing her to face the laws of Ghana for being a tool of destruction on the country, this is just an example of how the jubilee house is protecting the criminals in Ghana. Also, because the NPP is leading lawlessness in the country, especially in recent times. They are using diabolical instead of democratic means to push their candidate to be the flagbearer, a person who doesn't deserve to be rewarded with the presidency for mismanaging the economy to near death experience. This government simply doesn't have any empathy and are not credible, it is hard times Ghanaians seriously consider a third option to make power more competitive to achieve and force political parties to think like humans when they have the chance.
Fair enough, was it also a joke when implied that he'll "try and help"? Does he see it as a gesture or as a duty with no options?
Nana Akomea indeed lost his fine brains. You go and joke when people are dying and suffering. Iam disappointed at someone who I loved so much but politics has make him think like Nana addo
It's a big shame that the NDC, out of political message in terms of campaigning on policies, is desperately trying to make political points on baseless polemics. The worst of it all is the presidential candidate of the NDC, who is supposed to show the direction he will policy-wise go to turn things around and is dybolically fixed on defamation and propaganda to sway electorates to vote for the NDC. I can only say that breaking the 8 will be a desirable turning point in the dispensation of multi-party democracy in Ghana. It will help Ghanaians realize the fruits of 1D1F, FHS, and planting for food, only to mention a few. This will engage and force the NDC to design and campaign on policies instead of the defamation and baseless propaganda course it has taken.
That was a very wrong timing for a joke. Let's get serious kakra when we're in a serious situation. Asetena pa ma awrefie3!!!
