This year’s Vodafone Ghana Music Awards recorded some exciting new discoveries, among them, the now famous Dark Suburb afro-rock band, who enviably walked away as the winners of the “Unsung” category of this year’s Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.

Dark Suburb, barely a year old but already with a good following, have generated a large amount of interest among music lovers. The band is growing popular not just for their afro-rock ballads but also for the fact that they are anonymous.

Dark Suburb are a group of five masked and darkly dressed men with a chief priest and a minion. The band won the unsung category of the VGMAs hosted at the KFC So Good Music Lounge prior to the event date.

For winning, the group was given the opportunity by organisers Charterhouse and sponsor, Vodafone to perform live during the VGMA show. The band was nominated alongside other underground artistes, Koo Ntakra, Nerp X, Luther, Mz Yankey and Kingzkid.

Ghana’s alternative rock band Dark Suburb is most known for their famous single “Get Out”. As they performed at the VGMAs, many of their fans sang along to their unusual performance which featured their chief priest in all black, several dwarfs and painted dancers.

“Grand Papa” of Hip life, Reggie Rockstone, could not have hidden his excitement as he posted on Twitter and Instagram, saying: “DARK SUBURB IS THE TRUTH, GH BOUT TO BE SPRIZED! BIG UP #REFRESHING”.

On her part, Agnes Essah, Chief Marketing Officer of Vodafone was happy that her company had helped to discover new music talent especially following the raging success of Wiyaala, 2012 Vodafone Icons winner and current VGMA “Female Vocalist of the Year, 2014”.
