The British Academy Childrens Awards took place earlier this week in London, celebrating the very best in childrens film, television, games and online media of the past year and the talent behind their successes.
Hollywood golden child 12 year old Kwesi Boakye is the voice of Darwin Watterson on The Amazing World of Gumball, a brand new International show on Cartoon Network which combines 2D and 3D animation in a live-action setting, and follows the misadventures of 12-year old Gumball and his innocent, naive brother Darwin.
Kwesis character Darwin used to be the family pet until he sprouted legs and became one of the Wattersons. In an interview with Daniel Lennard, executive producer and vice president of original development,Cartoon Network said In terms of favorite characters, Darwin is probably my favorite. Hes really cute (amazing job by the actor Kwesi Boakye!) and full of surprising talents in one episode he starts yodeling
The freshman animated series received its international debut in May, and has since rewarded Turner Broadcasting /Cartoon Network with its first of the prestigious childrens BAFTA awards for the network. Kwesi was ecstatic to receive news that the The Amazing World of Gumball would be taking home the honors of Best Animated Show and Best Writing.
Kwesi said Im soooo happy and excited. I knew the show was in London but I didnt know how much the kids loved it. Ive always worked on adult shows, so to have kids my age love our show is awesome! The BAFTA kids vote competition powered by Yahoo attracted over 400,000 votes from 7-14 year-olds in the UK.
This isnt the first time Kwesi has been a part of an amazing cast, earlier this year TNTs original sitcom Men of a Certain Age received a major prestige boost by making the Peabody list. The Peabody Awards recognize excellence and meritorious work by radio and television. This was TNTs first Peabody victory since 2002; Men of a Certain Age received ace reviews from TV critics as well. The Network released a statement about how proud they are to be a part of Men of a Certain Age for two seasons. The show has featured great storytelling and impeccable performances by its very talented cast.
Kwesi has made a huge name for himself starring in blockbuster films such as Disneys The Princess and The Frog, Tyler Perrys I Can Do Bad All By Myself, and has also lent his incredible talent to many top rated television shows including Men of a Certain Age, The Mentalist, Hawaii Five-O, Southland, Community, Hawthorne, Day Break, The Shield and many more.
2012 already holds great promise for young Kwesi with Tinsel Town buzzing over two of his upcoming projects. His anticipated performance in the films Unconditional which also stars Michael Ealy and Lives of the Saints where he plays hip-hop moguls Curtis 50 Cent Jacksons son.
Also a budding philanthropist, Kwesi recently lent his name and creative talents to the Nextaid foundation and donated 100% of his interest to the charity. In Kwesis words, Healing the world one good act at a time makes us live in a better place. So keep your eyes on show businesss next great actor whose heart may be the only thing bigger than his amazing talent.
