The US Bishop who stole the show at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding has been diagnosed with cancer.

Michael Curry is likely to have known about his condition when he delivered his rousing sermon about the power of love. The pastor revealed on Twitter that he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer and will begin treatment next week. The Bishop told his followers that his prostate gland will be removed and asked that they pray for him. Removal is considered a ‘cure’ for the cancer in cases where the disease has not metastasized, or spread, elsewhere in the groin or body. Survival rates for men with early stage prostate cancer are excellent, with nearly 100% surviving at least five years after diagnosis, according to the Mayo Clinic.

The Most Reverend Curry said: ‘A few months ago, through my annual physical, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. ‘After a variety of tests, consultations, and conversations with my wife and daughters, I decided on a surgical treatment course. ‘On this coming Tuesday, July 31st, I will have surgery to remove the prostate gland. ‘I am happy to say that the prognosis looks very good and quite positive.’

He said he had received a lot of support and helpful advice, adding he was ‘blessed’ by a ‘great and loving God in whose hands we always remain.’

The Bishop shot to worldwide fame after his speech at the royal wedding at Windsor Castle in May. His sermon was entitled ‘The Power of Love’ where he spoke passionately about love and quoted Martin Luther King. ‘There’s power in love,’ he said. ‘There’s power in love to help and heal when nothing else can. ‘There’s power in love to lift up and liberate when nothing else will. ‘There’s power in love to show us the way to live… ‘Dr King was right: we must discover love – the redemptive power of love. ‘And when we do that, we will make of this old world, a new world.’
