Ghana defender John Mensah claims he is still the general captain of the Black Stars despite his long absence from the West African side.
The 30-year-old lost his captaincy to leading striker Asamoah Gyan while he has not been included in the Ghana squad by coach Kwesi Appiah since the 2012 AFCON.
Mensah is recuperating from a nagging back injury which is threatening to end his career.
Ahead of Ghanas crucial 2014 World Cup qualifying play-off against Egypt, the former Sunderland and Olympique Lyon center-back insists he still remains the general captain of the Black Stars.
Ive been recuperating from injury thats why I have not been playing for now. But Im still the general captain of the team [Black Stars], he told Asempa FMs Enoch Walanyo.
Mensah is released by French side Stade Rennes after the expiration of his short-term contract at the club last season.
Many Ghana fans called for the inclusion of Mensah in the Ghana squad to face Egypt after most of Ghanas defenders were ruled out with injuries.
