Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan, who surprisingly left Sunderland to join United Arab Emirates side Al-Ain on loan for a large fee in September 2011, is a transfer target for an unnamed club in Qatar.
According to sources, the rich Qatari club are willing to part with a record-breaking sum of money in order to acquire the services of the striker, who scored a brace over the weekend to increase his tally to 14 in the UAE league.
The 26-year-old will have two years left on his Sunderland contract at the end the current UAE Pro-League season, and his future could have a major bearing on manager Martin ONeills transfer plans at Sunderland.
Al-Ain are keen to turn Gyans season-long loan into a permanent transfer but ONeill said last week that they were not the only club in the UAE showing an interest.
On Gyans possible return to the Stadium of Light, ONeill told the Chronicle: I know I said some weeks ago that Id be hoping to speak to him. But one day has run into the next and I havent had a chance.
I dont think the position [of Al-Ain] has changed that much. But there was another club out there in the United Arab Emirates looking at his services.
Gyan joined Sunderland from French club Rennes during the summer of 2010.
