A big mosque will be named after AC Milan star Sulley Muntari when it is completed in his hometown in Ghana after the midfielder funded its construction.

The Konongo Central Mosque, which is just close to the house where the player was born, is being given a massive facelift thanks to the cash from the Ghana international.

Muntari called for the old building to be pulled down for the construction of a modern mosque befitting the status of the town where his father is also the Chief of the Muslim community.

Now with the massive edifice nearing completion, leaders of the community have decided that the mosque in Konongo in the Ashanti region should be named after the player.

“Sulley Muntari is an illustrious son of this community,” Alhaji Toufiq Issah, one of the Muslim elders in in Konongo said.

“He is a Zongo boy, he grew up here and he has been able to raise the name of the town high whereas he has also contributed immensely to the building.

“This would also serve as a big motivation to others to always do their best to help the Zongo community and Konongo as a whole.”

This is not the first time Muntari has been involved in the construction of a mosque as he had done that in some towns in Ghana.

At the African Cup of Nations earlier this year in Gabon he paid for a public address system to be installed in a town mosque at Ngouni which didn’t have the facility to call worshipers for prayers.

Several other Muslim footballers have been active on this front as Malian star Freddy Kanoute bought a mosque for a Muslim community in Sevilla in Spain.

Ivorian stars Kolo Toure and Yaya Toure, who play for Manchester City, have also been instrumental in building mosques in Ivory Coast.
