A Ghanaian businessman and sports enthusiast, Mr. Kofi Amoah has revealed that football match officials sometimes had to be bribed to ensure that they officiate matches fairly.
Mr. Amoah who disclosed this on TV3’s Hot issues programme last Saturday said he first came across the phenomenon when as a member of management he was asked before an international match, whether he” had done his homework.”
He later discovered that doing one’s homework before a match meant bribing the referee but the referee was to be bribed not to favour one’s team but in order that he officiates fairly.
He said the assumption was that the referee has already been bribed by the adversary team so the purpose of the bribe was to equalize matters. Mr. Amoah was answering questions on the impact of FIFA scandals on FIFA itself and on football in the country.
According to him, the Confederation of African Football and the Ghana Football Association are all miniature versions of FIFA so cleaning up FIFA will help bring sanity to football in the various member countries of FIFA.
