It comes as a surprise, but Gianni Infantino will continue as FIFA president until 2023 in the absence of candidates to go up against in the elections scheduled for June 5.

To be a candidate, in addition to being involved in football in the last two years, five federations need to endorse the opposition to the presidency, which has not happened.

Infantino will attend the UEFA congress in Rome on Thursday and already announced that he would run for re-election last June, stating that he had support from 190 federations.

UEFA have not spoken, though Africa, South America, Central America and a number of Asian federations have.

FIFA have invested in women's football, implemented VAR and selected the venue for the 2026 World Cup - Canada, Mexico and the USA - under Infantino.

In the 2016 elections, the president received 115 votes compared to Sheikh Salin bin Ebrahim's 88, but in the first vote he had won by just three votes - 88 to 85.

Jordanian prince Ali Bin Al Hussein got four votes while Jerome Champagne got none.

Michel Platini's presentation was blocked by the Ethics Committee as he had violated the code of ethics.
