Ghana won her first gold medal at the ongoing All Africa Games yesterday when the Golden Rackets beat DR Congo in the finals of the doubles tennis competition.

The pair of George Darko and Wisdom Na-Adjrago defeated their Congolese counterparts in two straight sets of 6-4, 6-4 to win Ghana’s first ever gold medal in tennis at the continental showpiece.

Originally scheduled for Wednesday, the final was postponed to yesterday due to poor visibility at the venue.

But that had very little impact on the Ghanaians who gave their opponent very little breathing space, dominating in both sets.

That is expected to serve as a morale booster for the Black Queens who are also ready to engage the Indomitable Lioness of Cameroon in the final of the women football event.

Both players expressed delight for making history as the first Ghanaian pair to win Ghana her first gold from the Games.

“I am very happy. It wasn’t an easy journey but we did our best and we emerged victorious. We thank God for this feat,” Darko said.

Na-Adjrago said this should drum home the need for the sports authorities to focus on the development of the other sporting disciplines.

“Football is seen as the only sport in Ghana but that is not the case. Today we are celebrating tennis because it has given us a medal. It should mark the end of over concentration on football to the detriment of the other sports.”
