Afforestation Project To Benefit 4 Communities

Seven thousand tree seedlings are being planted in each of 4 communities including Ayerefia Battor, Matamanu, Njare, Monkrate in the Krachi East District in the Volta Region. Funded by the Ghana Social Opportunities Project under the climate change activity, the project is aimed at replacing the vegetative cover of the district which has been depleted through bushfires, logging, among other unhealthy human activities. It is also intended to mitigate the effect of climate change on the environment. The project has already taken off in Ayerefia Battor where about 5 hectors of land has been acquired and sensitization of residents have already taken place. Aside the environmental benefits, the initiative are expected to employ a number of people who would be doing the planting and monitoring the seedlings after planting. The effect of climate change in Ghana like many other countries has been so visibly evident mostly in rainfall paten and amount of rainfall, food production, and intensity of the sun rays among others thus calling for urgent efforts to change the trend before things get worse. Government over the years adopted several strategies including the call on people too shift to using liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) instead of charcoal and firewood. This to some extent worked but a lot of the rural folks are still dependent on trees for charcoal and firewood while the fight against bushfire is still not yielding the needed result because.
