After rejecting the NDC�s invitation to attend its Mantse Agbona rally, former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, has dropped another bombshell at Legon, alleging that President John Evans Mills rigged the party�s Sunyani congress.
She said the Sunyani congress that produced President Mills as the ruling NDC�s 2012 Presidential candidate was riddled with electoral malpractices that saw "thousands of people who were not delegates voting."
Nana Konadu was addressing the Akuafo Hall Ladies wing of the Students Representative Council whiles the NDC�s Mantse Agboena rally, which she and her husband abandoned was ongoing simultaneously on Saturday.
With thunderous applause from the gathering, she charged, �Even though we went to Sunyani, I did not want to break up the party so there were a lot of things that I did not want to talk about.�
According to former President JJ Rawlings' wife, she has been silent over the issue in order to protect the unity of the party founded by her husband.
She said: �People who were not delegates were voting as delegates and I know all the delegates; more than a thousand were not delegates, they voted so I let it be because if I wanted to deal with it, I will take the whole bunch to court, but I just decided no, it's not worth it, let them steal it, if that makes them happy, let them steal it.�
Nana Konadu observed that the internal bickering and disunity among party members were some of the fallouts from the Sunyani congress.
Mrs. Rawlings added �In my heart of hearts, I felt sorry for the party I belong to because it was like cracking the party in the middle and for me it was sad because we have built the party for more than 19 years and then suddenly 'boom' is not good.�
Concerning her absence at the rally grounds, she explained: �I went to a funeral in the Central region, but that is not why I�m not there; I have accepted an invitation to be here and I accepted it more than three weeks ago, so I am not gonna let these ladies down.�
The Office of former President Rawlings on Thursday issued a statement and warned the NDC leadership against using his name to pull crowds to party events.
There were indications that the former first couples would not attend the rally and the spokesperson for the Rawlingses, Kofi Adams, confirmed it hours to the rally.
