Ghana Police Should Open Up More - Dr. Whyte

A Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of African Studies, Legon, Dr. Michael Kpesah Whyte, has said the Ghana Police Service has every right to feel uneasy about recent attacks on it by a cross section of the public. The Public Relations Officer of the GPS, DSP Cephas Arthur in an interview with Citi News indicated that there has been a hate campaign by certain individuals, institutions and media houses who are attempting to denigrate the Police Service for their parochial and political interest. He bemoaned the trend and said it was negatively impacting the credibility of the police service. However, Dr. Whyte said there is not enough evidence to believe the hate campaign is being motivated by a particular group of people indicating that perhaps the police are becoming alarmed and they are drawing this kind of conclusion largely because of the elections and the nature of the politicisation of state institutions. He added: It is very good that the police are speaking out, it used to be the case where the police would never speak out, if indeed there is any clandestine activities to paint the police in a dark light, I think that by coming out they might be able to put the public on the alert and have these things stopped. Dr. Whyte, however, challenged the police to come out with evidence of such claims and deal appropriately with individuals or groups of persons who are arrested for any of such acts that are aimed at putting the image of the police in a bad taste.
