The Member of Parliament for Tamale South and Minister for Communication, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu has decried the low patronage of the ongoing biometric voter registration exercise.
He attributed the situation to poor publicity and impressed upon the National Commission for Civic Education and the Electoral Commission to step up public education on the exercise.
Hon. Iddrisu raised the concern after going through the exercise at the Tahazib Islamic Primary School polling station in the Tamale South constituency.
Emphasizing the importance of the voter ID card, Hon. Iddrisu said it could be used to facilitate financial transactions at the banks and hospitals.
He encouraged eligible voters to partake in the exercise, saying, �The right to vote must begin with the registration exercise and I therefore call on all to embrace the exercise with the seriousness it deserves.�
The Tamale South legislator commended residents in the area for the peaceful manner the exercise has been conducted so far.
He condemned the reported cases of threats and intimidations associated with the exercise and stated: �One has the right to prevent people who are using unconstitutional means to register.�
He complained about the long hours potential applicants spent in queues due to the use of obsolete equipment for the exercise and thus pleaded with the EC to replace such machines.
About 2,181 potential voters were registered at the Bilpeila primary �A� during the first phase of the exercise.
