Akufo-Addo Writes To Blaise Compaore

I am moved by recent events in Mali to write to you, because of their far-reaching implications for peace and stability in our region and, ultimately, its long-term development. I, along with millions all over the world, have watched with great admiration the outstanding mediatory role played by Burkina Faso, under your able leadership, in finding a peaceful solution to the crisis in Mali resulting from an ill-advised military intervention. It is most encouraging that the swift and principled intervention by ECOWAS leaders to restore the constitutional order in Mali has met with worldwide endorsement. Furthermore, it has reinforced our conviction that a united and purposeful ECOWAS is fully capable of meeting the aspirations of its citizens. This huge momentum and groundswell of support for ECOWAS must be seized upon in furtherance of our shared agenda for peace, democracy and development. While commending Your Excellency on the wisdom and courage with which you have responded to the unfortunate events in Mali, permit me to use this occasion also to urge the leadership of ECOWAS to remain steadfast in their resolve to resist any attempts to roll back our hard-earned democratic achievements. The New Patriotic Party believes that the leadership of our region is on the right track. We see as our natural allies all who are dedicated to the advancement of peace and democracy in West Africa. Please accept, Excellency, my best wishes for your personal well-being and success in your endeavours, and the renewed assurances of my highest esteem. Signed
