AFAG Supports Kennedy Agyapong

A pressure group, the Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG), has taken a swipe at the Christian Council of Ghana (CCG), the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD) and Dr. Kpesah Whyte over their reactions to the beleaguered Assin North MP, Kennedy Agyapongs inciteful comments. The bodies condemned Hon. Agyapongs intemperate language and cautioned politicians against such actions that could plunge the nation into chaos. But AFAG thought those institutions have been hypocritical and sentimental in their comments. According to the chairman of AFAG, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie, they failed to interrogate the genesis of Hon. Agyapongs comments and rather chose to sentimentally and hypocritically chastise him. AFAG wish to state unequivocally that the comments made by Mr. Kpesah Whyte, the Christian Council and the CDD are not only sentimental but hypocritical and misleading, he said. He emphasised: We stand by the position that there are systematic grievances and tensions and therefore society must rise to find solutions to these undercurrents and desist from getting the dust under the carpet; therefore to turn a blind eye on those whose actions triggered the conditional statements and chastise Hon. Kennedy Agyapong is nothing but sheer hypocrisy. Dr. Afriyie also expressed the groups reservations about the sequence of events and the laid back attitude adopted by the police in dealing with brutalities perpetrated on a section of the political divide. Agreeably, he said, AFAG was convinced that the Assin North MPs comments were unpalatable, but supported him in principle though on another breath advised him to apologise to Ghanaians. AFAG is and has always been cautious about the negative effects and repercussions of tribalism on us as a country; unreservedly we condemn any attempt to tribalise politics in this country and hence we urge the Honourable Agyapong to do the honourable thing, Dr. Afriyie added.
