President John Evans Atta Mills may soon battle impeachment charges as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) considers that option against him, having accused him of lying to the people of Ghana. The charge, although in the cooler for some time, appears to have been resurrected following the political drama over Kennedy Ohene Agyapong last week. In a lengthy statement cataloguing a myriad of political iniquities committed by the President, the main opposition party noted that the president �is neck-deep in this whole judgment debt saga and he may soon have to answer impeachment questions on these very serious charges, which are supported by considerable evidence�. The president suffered verbal attacks when his claim of innocence in the smelly judgment debt saga was deflated after the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) inadvertently pointed out that he tried to stop the payment to Alfred Agbesi Woyome on two occasions to no avail. This was immediately considered by those who followed the development to mean that the president had lied to the nation. It is this segment of the matter which the NPP seeks to exploit by exploring the possibilities of initiating impeachment procedures against him. The Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey-authored statement noted that �President Mills has left many questions unanswered and lied outright when he initially told Ghanaians that he knew nothing about these fraudulent judgment debt payments, until he was exposed by an investigation he set up to cover up his complicity and that of his Ministers.� This, the party observed, provided sufficient grounds for impeachment proceedings to be initiated against him. �The President has, thus, made any probable case for impeachment proceedings to be brought against him weighty,� the party observed. The NPP said Kennedy Agyapong�s troubles were because of the frontline role he played in the Woyome saga. �The NPP MP, Mr. Agyapong, has, over the last few months, shown exceptional courage and patriotism in exposing the extent of the �gargantuan crimes� being committed through the instrumentalisation of very senior people in the government, including the President, who ultimately authorized these payments,� the statement said. It added that it was because of selective justice displayed by the law professor, President Mills, that perpetrators of the fraud were walking freely. �Ghanaians can judge for themselves why the two Ministers of State directly and actively responsible for making these corrupt payments, Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, the Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, and Mrs. Betty Mould Iddrisu, the former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, have not been charged for this unprecedented fraud against the Ghanaian people,� it said. This is not what the president would want to be confronted with at this time, having survived the heat generated by the Woyome judgment saga when it hit the public domain a few months ago. President Mills has suffered various accusations in the past few months but the most serious of them all is this affront to his integrity. Lying in some political dispensations, when proven beyond reasonable doubt, is a recipe for impeachment. The NPP also accused President Mills of gross abuse of power given, according to them, the Kennedy Agyapong arrest, detention and shuffling from one court to the other until he was released on bail. �Kennedy Agyapong�s arrest is about the abuse of power by deploying state resources against political opponents and not about the enforcement of Ghana�s laws,� the party pointed out, adding, �Only the Attorney General who could have approved the charge of treason and this charge exposes President Mills as playing a very dangerous game.� Without mincing words, the party turned its heat on Nii Lante Vanderpuye, the presidential staffer, whose brutal activities in the Odododiodoo constituency have gained notoriety. �Ghanaians can all bear witness to the system of apartheid and �ethnic cleansing� being supervised by Nii Lante Vanderpuye in the Odododiodioo constituency. People who are ordinarily resident in the constituency but deemed by NDC agents to have non-Ga-sounding names or who cannot speak Ga are prevented from registering, a blatant breach of the Constitution,� it pointed out.
