JHS Pupil Aborts Pregnancy At Examination Centre

A female student who took part in the Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE) is suspected to have aborted a foetus into a toilet at one of the centres in Accra. The unnamed student was apparently pregnant as she wrote the exams but hid the pregnancy from her parents and school authorities. The deputy Director of the Ghana Education Service, (GES) Stephen Adu who revealed the incident to XYZ News said some of the pregnant students are making it difficult for the GES to give them the needed assistance in writing their exams. Mr Adu said there are even some of them whose conditions are not good enough that the parents would have to ask for deferment so that they take the exams next year and these things are not coming that is why we hear some of the girls delivering babies and all these things. They went to the toilet and they found the baby dead. These girls have the belts to squeeze their stomach and it is hard for us determine some of the cases. Mr. Adu however added that the Education Service has begun investigations to identify the girl who had the abortion. Meanwhile, final year Junior High School students are writing their last and final paper in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) today. Over 376, 000 candidates from 11,164 public and private Junior High Schools took part in the examination. They are made up of 203,394 boys and 173,465 girls. The examination is an entry requirement for pupils planning to go to Senior High Schools in the country.
