Two Boys Drown In Pit At Road Construction Site

Two pupils who went swimming in an uncovered pit at the road construction site at Asokwa in Kumasi last Friday evening have drowned, raising concerns over lack of safety precautions at such sites in the Kumasi Metropolis. A few months ago, a similar fate befell three young boys who also drowned in another uncovered pit at the Sofoline road construction site. Last Friday's incident happened at about 5pm when the boys identified as Joshua Agor, 13, class six pupil of Obiri Yeboah Basic School at Amakom, and Michael Sekyere, 14, JHS one pupil of the Global Evangelical Basic School at Sisanakye jumped into the pit located just about 150 metres away from their house. Agor was said to have first jumped in, swam and came out, and Michael also tried swimming but he started drowning and shouted for help. Agor then jumped in and tried to save him, but they both sunk. A colleague of the deceased, 10-year-old Evans Lumor, who was with them, upon realising what had happened, rushed home and called for help. The rescuers took about 20 minutes to recover their dead bodies. Sources at the Asokwa Police Station, who are investigating the incident, ruled out any foul play, but echoed concern over the uncovered deep pits along the Asokwa- Angola Junction bye-pass. The Assembly Member for Anloga East Electoral Area in Kumasi, Mr Evans Kwabena Ablordeppey, advised parents to help to prevent such happenings.
