Stormy Winds, Rain Cause Death And Destruction In Coastal Ghana

Parts of coastal Ghana were left in complete darkness following a torrential rain in the country's coastal towns last Saturday afternoon. The rain lasted barely an hour, but left in its wake tumbled billboards, trees and a number of causalities. In Accra, residents experienced a frightening time when the gusty winds and rain blew down billboards and ripped off roofs from some houses. Eyewitnesses reported scenes of men, women and children running helter-skelter to safer grounds following the ravaging winds. While some others dashed away at top speed for their lives, a good number called on others for help as they clung to table-top wares to prevent them from being swept into the debris-filled air. Some of the affected areas in Accra included Spintex Road, Madina, Ashaley Botwe, Weija Barrier, Dome, Achimota, Asylum Down, Dansoman, Odorkor, East Legon, Nima Highway and Lapaz. Reports indicated that Kasoa, Winneba and Cape Coast also suffered from the brunt of the winds. Reports from Cape Coast revealed a seven-year-old girl and her mother met their untimely death when a tree broke from the stem and fell on a shop at Pedu, a suburb of Cape Coast, housing the Nigerian mother and her daughter.
