Korle-bu Junior Doctors Declare Indefinite Strike

Peacefmonline.com can confirm that junior doctors at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital are on an indefinite strike, effective Wednesday, to back their demand for adequate security at the hospital following the death of their colleague, Desmond Kabbah, under bizarre circumstances. 27-year-old Desmond Kabah was found naked on his bed with stab wounds and parts of the skin on his legs peeled off. The junior doctors blame the death of their colleague, which occured on Sunday night, on the porous security situation at the facility and gave a 24-hour ultimatum to the hospital authorities to address their security concerns. Following the ultimatum, the Greater Accra Regional Police Command detailed police personnel to beef up security at the Doctors Flats by attaching a policeman to each of the two flats in addition to the hospitals security to ensure that doctors and other hospital residents enjoy the needed security. But it appears the nerves of the junior doctors are still not calmed, neither are they unimpressed with management's efforts. Leader of the junior doctors, Justice Yankson, who confirmed the strike in an interview with Joy FM expressed disappointment that 48 hours after the incident, nothing has been done to improve security at their flats. The most important thing is that our members are now living in fear, most of them have deserted the houseman flats and the other junior doctors on the compound of Korle-bu are also threatened because you never know who will enter your room be it at the doctors flats or any part of the compound when you are going to work. What has happened to our colleague, very unfortunate as it is, could befall any of us and that is why the junior doctors association decided at their meeting today that they are going to throw their weight behind the earlier strike that had been embarked on by the house officers because the management of Korle-bu failed to meet their demand for adequate security, he said. Despite repeated assurances from management, Justice Yankson claims as at 5:30 am (Wednesday) there was no security personnel at post. "The good minded people of Ghana who are parents most of them have called their wards to go back home till the situation gets back to normal. The truth is people are in fear; people are living in a state of panic and nobody wants to go through such a situation...The security situation has to be beefed up," he demanded. More soon...
