Stop Further Sales Of Our Land

The Ga Dangme Council has called on government to end any further sales of government bungalows to politicians and their cronies. The council warned that any attempt to continue with the sales would be fiercely resisted by the Ga Dangme people. There can be no peace whenever and wherever peoples lands have been forcibly taken, illegally acquired or deviously annexed, council member Professor Jonas Akpanglo Nartey told the press in Accra yesterday. The council demanded that all transactions entered into by various governments under the nefarious Accra Redevelopment Plan must be reviewed and appropriate measures taken to restore sanity in government land administration. What is good for the goose is good for the gander and Ghanaians will not accept what amounts to the institutionalisation of a mischievous practice of different strokes for different people, it said. We emphasise that land space in Ga Dangme, especially in Accra, is severely limited. Government must therefore be very circumspect in considering any further acquisition of Ga Dangme lands for public purposes, he said. According to the council, a number of politicians had been beneficiaries of the Accra Redevelopment Plan and had therefore lost the moral credibility to correct the wrongs. It called for a review of The Administration of Lands Act, 1962 and the State Lands Act 1962 (Act 125) to ensure more judicious use and fairness of its provisions in matters of land acquisition and payment of compensation due. The Land Development Act 1960, Act 2 and LI 118 must be repealed on the grounds that they are discriminatory in form, content and substance in that they are only applicable in Accra, it said. According to Prof Nartey, as long as lands were used for public interest, the Ga Dangme Council had no problem, but if you take the lands and give them to families and friends then enough is enough.
