Violent Clashes In Kpemeli, 4 Badly Injured, Several Houses Burnt

Four persons have sustained gun injuries while more than 30 houses got burnt following violent clashes between Konkombas and Bemobas at Kpemeli, near Nakpanduri, in the Northern Region yesterday. The injured, who were identified as Peter Labic, Jubika Mintek, Konnah Peter and Kinasu Janga Biisu, are all believed to be Bemobas. At the time of filing this report, the four injured persons were receiving treatment at the Matthew Medical Centre (MMC) in Nalerigu. The clash followed a misunderstanding over a piece of land. It reportedly began on Sunday evening when the Bemobas allegedly attacked Konkombas and set most of their houses on fire. The two farming communities have had a longstanding land dispute which occasionally leads to violent clashes. Adamu Jegri, a resident of Kpemeli, told The Finder that yesterday�s clash had been preceded by confrontations between the two groups in the last few days. The eyewitness said in the early hours of Monday, following the previous attack by the Bemobas on some Konkomba community, there was a rapid retaliatory attack by the Konkombas on nearby Bemoba communities as well. He said, �The two sides engaged each other in gunshot exchanges while others set houses on fire and burned properties.� The Northern Regional Crime Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Maha Arhin, who confirmed the story to The Finder, described the reports as very worrying According to him, Bemobas attacked Konkombas in the late hours of Sunday, burning their belongings. DSP Arhin said a joint military and police force from the Gambaga and Bunkprugu units had been deployed to the area to restore security. DSP Arhin also added that the security forces had not yet effected any arrest due to the sporadic nature of the attacks.
