Government To Establish Cotton Authority To Oversee Operations Of Industry

Government is considering the setting up of an authority to oversee the operations of the cotton Industry. A Deputy Minister of Education, Mahama Ayariga, announced this at the closing ceremony of a stakeholder meeting in the cotton sector in Accra. The authority, he noted, will help regulate the activities of middlemen and stop the smuggling of the produce across borders. Meanwhile, the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation, UNIDO is to support, Ghana's Cotton Sector with $ 250,000. This investment is to revive the sector and ensure that farmers have access to quality seeds and produce cotton to meet international standards. This was announced when a delegation from UNIDO led by its country representative, Frank Van Rompaey called on Vice President John Mahama, at the Castle, Osu. The delegation is in the country to attend a workshop on ways to enhance Ghana's Cotton Sector. Vice President Mahama called on UNIDO to look at other area's like job creation for the youth.
