Residents of Kegyina, a farming community near Axim in the Western Region, were grief-stricken when news broke that a 25-year-old taxi driver in the area, Akwetey Tetteh, had allegedly killed his pregnant wife, Yaaba Moti, over suspicion of food poisoning.
Sources at the farming community alleged that the suspect might have used a heavy stick to hit the head of his wife from behind, killing her instantly.
DAILY GUIDE learnt that the taxi driver hit the helpless woman, with whom he had two children, when the deceased was preparing supper for the family at about 8pm on Tuesday, June 12, 2012.
Speaking in an interview with Daily Guide, Ebusuapanyin Kwame Ntiful Asare, the uncle of the deceased, explained that even though the suspect did not marry the deceased customarily, the two lived together and had two kids.
He, however, denied that the deceased was pregnant when the unfortunate incident happened.
He alleged that Tetteh usually subjected Yaaba to severe beatings anytime there was a misunderstanding between them.He noted that on that fateful day, the suspect returned home from work at about 8.30 pm and asked for his food.
When Yaaba served the suspect his meal, the husband complained that the taste of the food was unusual and accused the wife of poisoning it. According to the Ebusuapanyin, his niece denied Tetteh�s allegation and as a result, a heated argument ensued between them. He alleged that in the process, the suspect struck Yaaba from behind with his hand and the deceased fell unconscious.
�Tetteh quickly rushed my niece to the Axim Government Hospital where she was pronounced dead. A report was made to the Axim police and Tetteh was arrested,� he said.
When contacted, Supt. Kojo Nkansah, Axim District Police Commander, confirmed the incident and said the suspect was in police custody while investigations continued.
He mentioned that the body of the deceased had been deposited at the Axim Government Hospital morgue pending autopsy.
