Former WBO Champion Alfred Kotey wont quit boxing

Former WBO Bantamweight Champion Alfred Kotey insists he wont quit boxing despite his humiliating to Frederick Lawson in a featherweight contest last month. The 44 year old has come in for a lot of criticism following his comeback with a former official of the Ghana Boxing Authority Amarkai Amartefio suggesting that Koteys life could be in danger. But speaking on the Joy Sports link which was monitored by www.liquidsportsghana.com, Alfred Kotey, said he is undecided on his next move. When asked by the show host and callers whether he will consider quitting again, Kotey said,I hope so.If I want to quit, I will quit. If it takes another year, I will see. When pressed further, the 1988 Olympian said I have to sit down with my family and see. He however added that with proper conditioning, he might be able to continue fighting saying, if I train very hard, I will be ok. Kotey was one of the finest Ghanaian boxers in the early 90s but his rise to fame did not last that much compared with compatriot Ike Quartey. But Kotey contends that Ike Quartey had better managers. I accept that I was a better fighter than Ike Quartey. But Ike Quartey had better promoters than me when we went professional. Kotey turned pro after competing in the 1988 Seoul Olympics. The Bukom based boxer won the WBO Bantamweight title on 30 July 1994 but lost it to Daniel Jimenez 21 October 1995 by a points decision. Meanwhile it is not clear whether Kotey will be allowed to continue his comeback considering his performance. The Veteran boxer admitted before the bout that, money was a key consideration for his decision but various stakeholders in the sport have openly called for his retirement again.
