CEPS Seizes Heroin At KIA

Officials of the Customs Excise and Preventive Service at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) have impounded two bags containing 10.4 kilogrammes of heroin abandoned by the owner. According to information available to DAILY GUIDE, the owner of the bags, a Nigerian, bolted after he was asked to open the bags for examination by the officials, after arriving from Ethiopia on June 13, 2012. The suspect allegedly told the customs officials at the enforcement point that he was collecting the keys to the bags from a friend but never returned. When the officials finally scanned the bags, it was revealed that they contained six parcels of the substances, concealed beneath them. A source at the airport told the paper that the scanned images revealed dark spots which prompted officials to examine the bags thoroughly. Preliminary field tests conducted on the substances proved positive for heroin. The bags, together with the heroine, have been handed over to the Narcotic Control Board (NACOB) for investigations to continue. When DAILY GUIDE contacted Alhaji Mahfuz Naseruden, Assistant Commissioner of CEPS at KIA, he confirmed that the bags and the substance had been handed over to NACOB to continue with investigations.
