Obuasi Municipality Census Figure Is Incorrect - NPP

The New Patriotic Partys Parliamentary candidate for Obuasi, Kweku Kwarteng, is calling on the Statistical Service to take a second look at the figure stated as the population in the constituency. According to Mr. Kwarteng the figure 168,641 published as the population of Obuasi Municipal per the 2010 population and housing census is incorrect. In a letter to the service and copied to the Electoral Commission, Mr. Kwarteng expressed concern over how the census figures were computed explaining that the Obuasi Municipality is a much larger area than Urban Obuasi. Obuasi Municipal as defined by LI 1795 covers all of the previous Urban Obuasi, but in addition, also covers the following densely populated suburbs: Sanso Old Town, Binsere, Kunka, Brahabebome, Akaporiso, Odumase, and Kwabinakwakrom. He therefore stated that the figure given as the population of the Obuasi Municipality only represents Urban Obuasi, which according to him is a smaller part of the area. This mistake is serious for obvious reasons. Resource allocation to Obuasi Municipal on the basis of the woefully understated population would be lower than the people in the municipality legitimately deserve. Investors who depend on these census figures to evaluate available markets for their products could direct their investments away from the municipality. The understatement of the population of Obuasi Municipal or Obuasi Constituency could affect the Electoral Commissions decision on whether or not to create another constituency in the municipality. The effects of this error are infinite. Kweku Kwarteng is therefore praying the Statistical Service to to rectify this mistake and immediately communicate same to all relevant institutions as a matter of URGENCY. We are very willing to help the Ghana Statistical Service resolve this problem without any delay.
