A former President of the National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana, George Kyei Baffour has rubbished assertions by members of the National Democratic Congress that the NPP is to blame for the 86 vehicles which were left to rot in a bonded warehouse. The vehicles, which were meant for distribution to local assemblies, were ordered by the erstwhile NDC administration in 1999. The first batch of 23 was delivered before the 2000 elections but the second batch of 86 came in after the elections in 2001. Former officials in the Kufuor administration have said the vehicles were rejected because they were not acquired through formal procedure and did not meet the correct specifications. The suppliers, African Automobile Limited are demanding the sum of 1.5 billion dollars as the cost of the vehicles, an amount which Mr. Kyei Baffour says will plunge the country into another judgment debt. Speaking to XYZ News, Mr. Kyei Baffour stated that the NPP administration was not aware of any contractual agreement to the effect that there was an agreement between the Government of Ghana and any supplier to supply 86 vehicles. �This NDC administration at that time had not formally engaged any supplier to supply 86 vehicles and for that matter in handing over of affairs of state to the NPP administration, there was no indication that government was committed to by way of contractual agreement with the supplier to supply 86 vehicles. �The issue of contention is that we need to have a copy of the formal agreement between government of Ghana at the time and the suppliers then we can interrogate the issue�.
