Tip-Toe Lane Phone Sellers Arrested

THIRTY PERSONS including a woman, Frederica Antwi and Kwame Prah, 19, have been arrested at Tip-toe Lane near the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra on suspicion of retailing stolen electronic gadgets. Police officers from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters led by Chief Superintendent Faakyi Kumi organized a swoop in the area Wednesday morning leading to the arrest of the suspects. Akwasi Abu, 23, Stephen Asafoah, 30, Mustapha Boye, 37, Kwaku Gyasi, 30, Lulas Ayisah, 25, Dodzie Yao, 28, Samuel Ofori, 24, Emeka Opara, 22, Frederica Antwi, 26 and Kwame Prah, 19 were some of the suspects. The police also seized many phones and accessories as well as ten used lap top computers. The thirty are currently in custody at the CID Headquarters undergoing screening while assisting investigations. The Director-General CID, Commissioner of Police (COP) Prosper Agblor, told DAILY GUIDE the operation would be sustained in order to deter dishonest receivers from the act. He explained that the Tip-toe Lane area at circle had gained notoriety in the trade of second-hand goods most of which are dishonestly received. The area, he noted, has been identified as one of the hubs for the disposal of stolen items. It is public knowledge that robbery suspects and thieves quickly disposed of their booties there at very low prices. On a few occasions, a source said police have traced missing items of complainants to the area. The operation, the CID boss explained is a follow up to a similar one organized some six months ago to send a strong warning to riff-raffs who may be using the centre for criminal activities to bear in mind that the police are vigilant and would come after them.
