The Vice President John Dramani Mahama has taken yet another swipe at the former President, Jerry John Rawlings over his June 4, 1979 and 31st December 1981 coup d��tats.
In an interview with Straight Talk Africa show host Shaka Ssali in New York on Wednesday July 11, 2012 the vice president said that all coup d��tats are unnecessary and should not be entertained since it draws every country backwards.
�I don�t have any problem with our international airport been named after Kotoka because as a historian I know that names are given to serve both the good and the bad and so what I think is that all �Kotoka�s� should not be entertained and there should be no more of them� the veep said this in response to how he felt anytime he gets to the Kotoka International Airport.
The airport was named after Kotoka by the National liberation Council (NLC) after he was killed just close to the airport in memory of him after the 1966 coup.
John Mahama made these comments in the interview on his first book �My First Coup d��tat: And Other True Stories from the Lost Decades of Africa.�
The book which was launched in New York on July 3, 2012 chronicles the experience he went through after the 1966 coup that ousted his father�s government from power.
According to the vice president after the coup his father was stripped off his wealth and the family had to start life all over again.
�I was in Achimota boarding school at that time and I did not know what was happening, I only became aware when we broke for the Easter and I had to stay on campus for almost two weeks because my father could not come and pick me up,� he added.
The veep claimed that when he was in Achimota boarding School, his father who was a Minister in the CPP government usually came or sent a driver to come and pick him up during vacations but because of the coup he lost all those pecks and had to stay with his elder sister who was an air hostess for sometime because his father was nowhere to be found.
All these come in the wake of the founder of NDC�s allegations that the ruling party has abandoned the values and principles of June 4 and December 31 which form the foundation of the NDC.
It is also public knowledge that former President Rawlings has openly described Kotoka has his role model, the man who overthrew the CPP government in 1966.
