Family Advices Gyan Against Taking Penalties

The father of Ghanaian striker Asamoah Gyan has confessed on an Accra-based radio station that the family has advised the Al Ain goal poacher not to take penalties as he returns into the Black Stars squad. Speaking on Peace FM, Opanin Gyan, father of the former Sunderland striker, mentioned that the Ghana Football Association and Black Stars coach, Kwasi Appiah, were instrumental in goading the former Sunderland star to rescind his decision of quitting the national team. Gyan announced his indefinite retirement from the Black Stars after Ghanas fourth-place finish at the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations. Ghana lost out on a place in the finals after falling 1-0 to eventual champions, Zambia, in a match which saw Gyan miss a penalty in the early minutes. The player-cum-musician adduced as reason a psychological trauma he battled since his penalty miss against Uruguay in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Gyan became the first player in world cup history to miss two penalties in consecutive world cups after his effort in the Ghana-Czech Republic match also hit the woodwork in Germany in 2006. Notwithstanding, Opanin Gyan added that the former Rennais and Udinese striker should not rush to take a penalty in a match even if he feels itchy to do so. The family has advised him not to rush to take penalties, Opanin Gyan said [in Twi]. Gyan on Wednesday, 11th July 2012 announced his return to the Black Stars by stating his availability for selection for qualifiers for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2014 World Cup.
