"A Slaves Story" @ National Theatre On August 1

A musical drama titled, A Slaves Story, written by young Ghanaian playwright Yaw Asiyama, and performed by K. Vision theatre group from England, will be staged at the National Theatre in Accra from Wednesday, August 1 to Friday August 3. The triumphant story of survival spanning over 250 years began in 1781with the abduction of Araba, who, together with a group of people from her village, was captured, taken across the Atlantic and sold into bondage. A friend of the village is responsible for their capture and is cursed by Araba. There will never be happiness in your family and amongst your descendants till there is joy in mine, she says, as shes being hauled away. It ended several generations later with Arabella. This drama would come to the stage in Ghana for the first time after a successful run in the UK! A journey of ruthless challenges, this masterpiece was told in verse, in rich poetic language, and embraced by beautiful music. 250 years later, Arabas descendants could well be walking amongst us. Praised by no less a person than the Rev. Jesse Jackson, Londons Theatreland - West End producer Jack Hylton and the BBC, the production has recently toured southern England, and would make a showing at this years Panafest before it hit the National Theatre. Leading a crew and a cast of eight is Georgina Ampaabeng Mainoo, formerly of the Ghana National Theatre and currently the CEO of K. Vision Productions, a multimedia production company based in the UK. The show was intended to thrill theatre in Ghana.
