The one week celebration of the late Prof. John Evans Fiifi Atta Mills was held at the Jubilee Park in Cape Coast yesterday where thousands of people dressed in red and black attires joined his family members to mourn him.
The mourners included Members of Parliament, the clergy, chiefs and queen mothers, heads of various institutions, opposition party members as well as various singing groups.
Addressing the crowed, the late president�s sister, Mrs. Mercy Araba Quarshie, appealed to Ghanaians to respect the peace of the country even at a time that her brother was no more.
Mrs. Quarshie bemoaned a situation where people would take advantage of his brother�s absence to cause mayhem or confusion that would tarnish the hard worn reputation of the country.
She therefore called for unity among Ghanaians and further commended them for all they had done for the family during this painful period.
She described Prof Mills as humble and very supportive to the family and therefore prayed that God would keep him by his side till they met again.
The Central Regional Minister, Comfort Ama Benyiwa Doe, described the late president as a unifier, humble and great listener who was able to serve the country well.
She stated that the region had lost a great person since the late president did a lot of development for the people in the area when he was given the nod.
�This is the first time the region has been able to produce a president and he could not even complete his first term in office and this will always be the saddest story in the lives of the people of the region,� she stated.
She disclosed that the late president, who was noted for peace, used his governance to deepen democracy in the country.
Madam Benyiwa Doe, who arrived at the ceremonial grounds around 10am, started weeping bitterly, compelling others to burst into tears.
The late presidents� brother-in-law, Prof. Kofi Nketsiah Afful, reading a tribute on behalf of the in-laws, said God had an assignment for the late president and that was why he made a lot of sacrifices for the country through his hard work.
Prof. Afful, a former Economics lecturer at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), hinted that although the late president was not a politician, he tried to introduce tolerance into the Ghanaian politics when he was given the mandate.
