Passing CI 73 Will Create Conflicts

The Parliamentary Select Committee on Subsidiary Legislation has given indications that a number of Ghanaians risk being disenfranchised in the December polls if the House goes ahead to approve Constitutional Instrument (C.I. 73) for creation of new constituencies. This was contained in a report submitted to Parliament on Monday by the committee where it further indicated that if the instrument is passed in its current state it could create conflicts because it is riddled with errors, omissions and misplacements of electoral areas The C.I. 73 is supposed to help in the creation of some 45 new constituencies across the country which would bring the total number of constituencies in the country to 275. Citifmonline.com is in possession of a copy of the report from the committee which would be debated on Tuesday and it says in part the passage of this instrument in its current state will result in a myriad of challenges, conflicts and disenfranchisement of registered voters and potentially disturb the peace of the electoral process and of the nation. Candidates where electoral areas have been omitted from the CI 73 may not be able to contest the elections. This will affect the candidates, political parties and other stakeholders. In conclusion the report said, the committee therefore recommends to the House to adopt its report and annul the Representation of the People (Parliamentary Constituencies) Instrument, 2012 (C.I. 73) in accordance with Article 11(7) of the constitution.
