Mohammed Polo Rubbishes Andre Ayew Armband Talks

Ghana legend Mohammed Polo has rubbished calls for Andre Ayew to be handed the Black Stars captains armband. Rahim Ayew re-ignited the debate by claiming last week that his younger brother was the ideal leader the Black Stars require to end their trophy drought on the continent. The controversial ex-Hearts of Oak great who has been critical of the leadership qualities of John Mensah insists the solution does not lie in the hands of the Marseille winger. Ive said this before that for Dede Ayew, its too early for him to be captain. It was this same thing that brought friction between his father and other players in the national team, Polo told 90 Minutes. Even during the Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon this year, it was this captainship issue that brought undermining in the team and they started having bad results, I think Dede is too young because if hes given the captainship, its a recipe for division because it will come to a time that the senior players in the team will not side with him, He added: I tell you they will never cooperate with him. I have the experience. When I was at Hearts and they wanted to make me captain, I said no because senior players like Anas Seidu, Peter Lamptey and many others were there, I went to the seniors and told them that why is it that you people are all there and they said I should be captain? And they said dont worry. If its accepted by them (senior players), then its okay but I tell you they wont cooperate with him. There are many who have touted the leadership qualities of the Marseille winger after he captained the countrys under-20 team to win the World Youth Championship in 2009- a historic feat chalked by an African nation in the 33-year history of the championship.
