Journalists asked to subject reports to test

Mr Henry Ford Kamel, Volta Regional Minister, on Saturday called on journalists to subject their election-related reports to ethical, moral and sensitivity tests, in order to safeguard peace in the country. He said: If we quarantine ourselves within these limits we can come out heroic. The Minister was speaking at the opening session of a two-day workshop on election reporting, organised for the Parliamentary Press Corps in Ho. He reminded journalists that a vast majority of the citizenry, including politicians, take what journalists report and broadcast as the truth and base their decisions on them. Mr Kamel said this placed greater responsibility on journalists to exercise sound judgment in their work to protect the countrys democracy. Mr Andrew Edwin Arthur, Dean of the Parliamentary Press Corps, asked journalists: to resist moves by politicians to use us to sow seeds of discord among the Ghanaian populace. He said the utilization of the Media Development Fund and exercise of oversight responsibility over the media by the National Media Commission, Ghana Journalists Association and the Private Newspaper Publishers Association were crucial to dealing with mediocrity in the media. He said these and other issues needed to be addressed seriously to save the media from losing their respect and relevance in the country. Mr Yaw Boadu Ayeboafo of the Graphic Communication Group advised journalists to take initiatives and responsibilities towards making journalism a respected profession in the country.
