President Mahama Says Rule Of Law Is A Prerequisite To Ensuring Peace And Nurturing Democracy

President John Dramani Mahama has acknowledged that rule of law is a prerequisite to ensuring peace and nurturing democracy. Addressing the 67th UN General Assembly in New York, President Mahama stated that since Ghana returned to democratic rule 20 years ago, steps have been taken to strengthen governance institutions to ensure that the rule of law is prosecuted to the letter. President Mahama also noted that Ghana believes in building strong institutions and not strong leaders as once stated by President Barack Obama. The country is therefore putting in place a number of structures to ensure that governance institutions are strengthened. He cited the development of legislations to govern the oil sector and the Judicial Service among others. Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama has held discussions with UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon at the UN Headquarters in New York on the sidelines of the 67th UN General Assembly. The two discussed preparations for the upcoming elections in Ghana, as well as the United Nations support in that area. They also discussed the situation in Cote d'Ivoire and its regional implications and the need to ensure that the country continues on its path towards lasting peace and stability. Secretary General Ban Ki Moon thanked Ghana for her continued support for UN peace keeping operations. The two leaders underlined their concerns over the worrying situation in Mali and the need for international and regional support for a resolution to the issue.
