National Security Investigate Trainees Arrested At Secret Camp In Volta Region

National Security has begun investigating 32 people including six minors for allegedly establishing a training camp at Tongo-Dzemeni in the South Dayi District of the Volta Region. The suspected combatants were said to be undergoing training under the cover of darkness. Ghana's National Security Coordinator, Lt. Col. (retd) Gbevlo-Lartey confirmed this to Joy News and said the suspects; including some Ghanaians and other African nationals were being interrogated. He said it was too early to tell the real motive for the training, even though he admitted the training was a bit unusual. He said the training sessions were done at odd hours and promised that national security would get to the bottom of the matter. Lt Col Gbevlo Lartey said his outfit was on top of the situation saying the suspects were now being questioned and the outcome will be made public. The National Security Coordinator, has also denied media reports that the scanner at the Cargo section of the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) had broken down resulting in the smuggling of drug through the port to the UK. Ghana last week made headlines for the wrong reasons after a haul of drugs impounded at Heathrow Airport were discovered to have passed through the Ghana airport. Col Gbevlo Lartey explained that there was only one consignment that contained both cannabis and cocaine and not two consignments as the media had alleged. Meanwhile, he has indicated that the Executive Secretary of the Narcotic Control Board who is contemplating resigning his position, would not be asked to do so. Col. Gbevlo Lartey insists that Mr Akrasi Sarpong has done more than enough in the fight against drugs in Ghana and cannot be asked to resign over those breaches. In an interview with Joy News, Mr. Akrasi Sarpong said he had taken responsibility for the breaches in security at the airport which allowed the drugs to pass undetected. NACOB officials were said to have vacated their post at the time the consignments were smuggled through the system. Mr. Sarpong said he was contemplating resigning over the matter. A deputy Interior Minister under the erstwhile Kufuor administration, Capt. (retd) Effah Darteh is demanding the resignation of the NACOB boss. But the National Security Coordinator, in an interview with Joy News said Akrasi Sarpong will not resign today, he will not resign tomorrow, at least that is what I will reccommend. He said the quality of work done by Akrasi Sarpong so far was commendable and he will not be sacrificed merely because of these two breaches. He stated however that measures had been put in place to correct the lapses at the airport.
