NDP Holds Convention Oct 12

The National Democratic Party (NDP) will hold its national convention on October 12-13, 2012. According to the party, the convention had not been postponed indefinitely, as was reported by some media houses. A statement signed by Dr David Sunua, the acting Director of Communications, and Dr Hilarius Asiwome Abiwu, the Interim Deputy Director of Communications, said the earlier postponement of the convention had nothing to do with the reluctance of Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings to accept the flag-bearer position of the party but rather due to logistical constraints and strategy. It noted with grave concern what the NDP called the persistent false and misleading publications being peddled in the media over the past weeks since the acquisition of the final certificate of the NDP. We want to state on record, without any equivocation, that as far as we can determine following discussions with Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, she agrees in principle with the principles, philosophy and aspirations of the NDP and will come on board, it stated. It further stated that the NDP was on course to making a huge impact in the 2012 elections and that no amount of selective, false and misleading reportage would dissuade the masses from supporting the agenda to return power to the people. According to the statement, the NDP was seeking to achieve participatory democracy and empowerment of the masses, adding, As a political party, we have community organisation bureaux (COBs) at each polling station. Essentially, the COBs concept ensures that members at each polling station do not only play the usual political mobilisation role but also play social watchdog roles, become economically empowered and participate in key decision-making processes. In playing the social watchdog role, members can provide feedback on state of affairs in the communities to avert possible calamity, so that once again we can be one anothers keeper. In terms of economic empowerment, each COB shall be constituted into a co-operative society such as COB cassava farming, COB cassava processing, COB susu collection, COB borborbor, etc. Participation in decision making is another priority. COB members live in the community together and can better tell the best candidate for appointment. They shall, therefore, form a key part of decision making for appointments, community projects, etc. Party structures shall not be mere election-winning machines; they shall not be ignored and left dormant in between elections, it said.
