STC Awarded 3rd Best Transport Operator

Distressed state transport operator, Intercity State Transport Company has been adjudged the third best transport company for adhering to road safety practices for the year 2012. This award was conferred on the company at the third Road Safety Awards in Accra. STC has over the past weeks been in the news for its inability to match up to the competition being posed by private transport operating companies. Thus, a move by the companys board of directors to auction it for sale and the intervention by government to rescue the company is yet to be settled. At the third awards ceremony founded on the theme Sustainable Growth of the Transport System; The Role of Role Safety, Transport Minister, Alhaji Collins Dauda espoused the need to limit human factor as a major cause of road accidents. According to him, travelling on our roads should not be a journey to the world beyond. He noted that the national road safety commission has always approached the better road safety agenda with exemplary passion and commitment in order to get the best from other interest groups. It has been projected that if nothing is done, by the year 2020, road traffic injuries could be the third leading cause of deaths globally with 90 per cent of such injuries occurring in developing countries including Ghana, he added. Award winners, particularly deserving journalists, were presented laptops, cell phones among other items worth GHC4000 for demonstrating their commitment to the advocacy of road safety issues.
