Vice President's Wife Advises Students

Mrs Matilda Nana Manye Amissah-Arthur, the Second Lady, on Friday asked school children to show maximum respect to authority, fellow pupils and to be polite to everyone. She said they should also be truthful at all times and in all that they do, explaining that the virtues of respect and truthfulness would become priceless as they climbed the academic ladder. "They are very valuable things that set us apart when we use them, they make us beautiful, they make us unique people, they make us sparkle in a crowd and they make us stand out among others," the Second Lady said. She gave the advice at the fourth Speech and Prize Giving Day of the Frafraha-Adenta Victory Presbyterian School, near Madina in Accra. The Day was held on the theme "Government-Private Schools, Partnership in Ghana Today", and in attendance were the parents, the sitting MP for the area, Mr Yaw Adu Asare; Mr Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore and Madam Fracnces Essiam, aspiring Members of Parliament for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) respectively. The Second Lady registered her joy at being among young people, saying that they represented the future of the nation. She reminded parents to ensure that pupils realise their educational aims by helping them to understand the subjects they study at school and to develop their character and personality. "In helping you advance academically and build your character, we instil in you discipline," Mrs Amissah-Arthur said, adding that, discipline was about obeying rules at school and at home. The Second Lady commended the school for making steady progress and emerging as a quality school in the country. Mrs Mavis Totobi-Quakyi, Managing Director of Katenit Limited, who chaired the function proposed to the educational authorities to institute awards schemes for pupils to encourage them to study hard and urged parents and teachers to motivate the children to study. "We tend to overlook little gifts; we must motivate those striving to make something for their parents", Mrs Totobi-Quakyi said. Prizes were awarded to deserving pupils, teachers and non-teaching staff of the school. The MP and the two aspiring MPs made donations to the school.
