Sarpong Decries Lack Of Maintenance Culture

Most Rev. Peter K. Sarpong, Archbishop Emeritus of Kumasi, has called for the abandonment of the culture of non-maintenance which has gripped the country. He said there was a time when the blue train system from Takoradi to Kumasi to Accra was a pleasure to watch. To have virtually no rail system in the country now is a tragedy. The same tragedy should go for the politicization of education, healthcare and social amenities, declaring that it was very unpatriotic to use education as a tool for political gain. He declared: But for the time being, let us think and meditate on the politicization of chieftaincy and road construction and its disastrous effects on the national ethos. He stated this in an article to The Catholic Standard tilted In Defence of non-politicization of Chieftaincy, Road Construction and other National Amenities. Archbishop Sarpong said there were many good, model and exemplary Chiefs in our traditional set-ups, citing the current Paramount Chief of the Juaben Traditional Area in Asante, Nana Otuo Siriboe ll. He said Nana Otuo Siriboe had been responsible for the tremendous improvement of the area he supervises as a Chief. He has been into education and transformed the area from that point of view. He has been responsible for very good road networks in the traditional area; supply electricity to his area; helped in educating many children, and has set up palm oil and Shea butter producing factories which yield money that he uses to develop his area and give employment to his subjects, he said. He said at the cultural level, he is a perfect Chief. He never lords it over his people; he is not expecting them to help him in any way. On the contrary, he is helping his people and people beyond his territory. He keeps the cultural heritage of the Juaben Traditional Area to an impeccable degree.
